For day two we awoke to a beautiful Gonzaga Bay sunrise. The staff at Alfonsinas had made fresh hot coffee waiting for us as we soaked up the view.
The plan for the day was to drive to Punta SanFran on the 2012 Baja 1000 race course. The route would take us past Coco’s Corner and into the Calamujue wash. After the wash we would head into L.A. Bay for lunch and onto Punta SanFran to camp.
The terrain after Coco’s started to get really interesting. We had crossed into the infamous Cardon forrest that Baja is famous for. The road was lined with Boojum trees, Chollas and Cardons but thankfully everyone navigated perfectly and we easily covered 250 miles. . We arrived at Punta SanFran where we set up camp as dinner was prepared for us. Fresh caught fish tacos! After dinner we built a fire in the sand and watched the stars. As we were laying there we could see what we thought was the stars reflection in the surf. Upon further inspection it turned out to be bioluminescence from phytoplankton. I tried really card to capture them with my camera but they were too faint. We fell asleep to the mellow sounds of the Sea of Cortez dreaming about cave paintings and tacos.
