Our first Palm Springs to Las Vegas is in the books!
We aired down and hit dirt early Saturday morning. The route would take us from the Yucca forests behind Big Bear to the dry lakes of Baker and into Las Vegas. Total mileage was around 250 miles, and very little of it was on pavement. After crossing into Johnson Valley OHV area we found a small patch of sand and had a two-wheel drive hill climb challenge. After the challenge we had time to play around in four-wheel drive and see what our vehicles were really capable off.
For lunch we stopped at the iconic Slash X Ranch Cafe. Slash X is an off-roader’s oasis in the middle of the desert. After lunch we navigated the high speed Power line Road, often seeing speeds above 70mph. The smooth graded road was often plagued with deep wash outs, which had our full attention. The graded road soon turned into a rock pass as we climbed the last grade into State Line. In total we drove for nearly 12 hours, and the look on everyone faces said they weren’t ready to stop!
The mines on the backside of Big Bear.
After a break on Soggy Dry Lake we hit the sand dunes of Johnson Valley for a two-wheel drive sand hill challenge.
